Goat milk products in the United States face an uphill battle.
That statement has nothing to do with the products and everything to do with tradition in the U.S.
Change comes slowly in the States. That is an undeniable fact.
Over the past few centuries, Americans have grown accustomed to their milk coming from cows. They have grown accustomed to their cheeses coming from cow milk. If any product has dairy products in it, we just assume those dairy products are bovine in nature, because that’s the way it has always been.
So, faced with overwhelming scientific and medical evidence which points to the undeniable health benefits of goat milk products, Americans still drag their feet, shake their heads, and then stick their collective head in the sand, which is all a bit odd, if you think about it, since our European ancestors thought exactly the opposite in the great goat vs cow debate.
It’s a head-shaker for sure. Medical study after medical study point to the health benefits of goat milk products, but present those studies to a person eating at McDonalds and, well, the outcome is predictable.
But progress is being made!
Americans are, ever-so-slowly, becoming more health conscious. They are, in greater numbers, looking at alternative products for a healthier lifestyle, and in that search they have discovered goat milk products. Goat milk soaps, goat milk whey, goat milk cheeses, goat milk probiotics, goat milk formula, the number of products are increasing rapidly to meet the surge in demand, and that warms our hearts.
At Mt. Capra we are all about healthy living. Mt. Capra is a small, family-run farm in the Pacific Northwest which, for nearly a century, has been producing premium whole foods and nutritional products from goat milk. Our grass-fed goats(grass farming) graze on pesticide-free and chemical-free forage 365 days a year. No hormones or antibiotics are used to increase production.
That is an important statement to us. It is not easy to raise any animal in a pesticide-free and chemical-free environment. It is not easy to ignore hormones or antibiotics. And yet we do these things because we believe, by not doing them, we produce a safe, incredibly healthy product.
Yes, change comes slowly in this country, but we are patient here at Mt. Capra, and we are determined.
