The Effectiveness of Dietary and Health Supplements

infant-formula-recipe-goat-milk-capra-card-kitA word or two about dietary and health supplements . . .

The word “supplement” means “in addition to,” and that is an important distinction to understand when taking dietary and health supplements.

Most adults in the United States take one or more supplements.  It is a huge market and it is rapidly growing, but because of its rapid growth there is a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding about it.

Supplements come in a variety of forms, from tablets to capsules, powders to drinks and energy bars; they include vitamins like D and E, minerals like calcium  and iron, herbs like garlic, and specialty products like probiotics and fish oils.  They all come with labels describing their contents and ingredients, and they all suggest a serving size.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not determine the effectiveness of supplements, but they do state that many supplements are beneficial for overall health and for managing certain health conditions.

Those are the facts as of 2018.

The first thing that must be understood, before taking a supplement (i.e.protein supplement), is that supplements are not a substitute for eating a nutritious variety of foods.  First and foremost, eating properly should always be the number one goal in any health program.  Add to that exercise.  However, it is a given fact that many people do not eat properly, and for those people supplements can, and do, provide benefits.

There is no doubt that Calcium and Vitamin D keep bones strong.  There is increasing evidence that things like Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oils help people with heart disease.  Other supplements, however, need further study to determine just how effective they are.  The National Institute of Health warns that many supplements have active ingredients which have strong side effects.

It is not our purpose to warn you against taking supplements.  That would be a bit strange considering Mt. Capra is in the supplement business.  It is our purpose, however, to make clear that you must do your due diligence before taking a supplement.

When we tell you that our goat whey is effective, we say that because it has been tested, re-tested, and has withstood the test of time.

When we tell you our lactose, ghee, and colostrums are effective, we say that because they, too, have passed our rigorous standards and tests.

And the same for our Mt. Capra Probiotics and other products we sell.

It is in our best interest to make sure our word is gold with regards to our products.

It is in your best interest to research any supplement before taking it.
