The Details

A Message from the Formula Recipe Creator, Joe Stout on the Infant Formula Shortage:

Goat Milk Formula Recipe Kit

This goat milk formula recipe kit contains all the ingredients you need to get started making your own goat milk formula at home! The kit will produce 256 oz of formula before you need to purchase more milk and lactose. Some of the ingredients in the kit will last much longer.

Note: This recipe kit is not a finished, ready-to-mix, infant formula but rather a combination of different REAL FOODS for those who cannot or choose not to breastfeed.

If breastfeeding is not an option, this kit could be the answer you’ve been searching for: the perfect DIY alternative to commercial infant formula.

What comes with each kit?:

  • 1 lb Whole Goat Milk powder
  • 1 13.8 oz Goat Milk Lactose powder
  • 1 10 oz Goat Milk Ghee
  • 1 Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1 Expeller-pressed Grapeseed Oil
  • 1 Unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses
  • 1 Head Start Multivitamin powder
  • 1 DHA for Infants
  • 1 50g Goat Milk Colostrum powder
  • 1 Flora Start Kids Probiotics
  • 2 Printed Recipes: A Dry Mix recipe and liquid Original recipe
  • Printed Start Here guide with instructions and FAQs
  • Access to help with the formula
  • Access to a private Facebook group for further support

See exactly what is inside each kit!

*Please note: We have switched to including olive oil in the kits instead of sunflower oil since the making of this video. Both oils work well in the formula and either could be used, but we have chosen to make this change because high quality olive oil is easier to find and is one of the highest sources of monounsaturated fats. The bar of soap is also no longer included. Sorry.

Easy to make

This recipe is super easy to follow and make and can easily fit into the busy lifestyle of a mom, dad, or caregiver with new little ones. We have created an entire website (goatmilkformula.com) dedicated to educating those wanting to know more about the science behind the goat milk formula as well as answers to many of the most frequently asked questions parents have when starting out on this formula recipe.

Goat Milk Formula: Simple Ingredients

This recipe was created by Joe Stout a graduate of both Washington State University and the University of Bridgeport. Joe has both a bachelors of science and masters of science in human nutrition and he has gone to great lengths to ensure that this homemade formula recipe is fully in compliance with the baby formula nutrient requirements of the 1980 Infant Formula Act. Using just 6 simple ingredients and 4 “once-per-day” ingredients, this formula can be made in just minutes. Check out the top 7 reasons you should be making your own formula at home.

What is the recipe for this goat milk formula?

(Note: The proportions listed are for making an 8 oz. bottle.)

Directions: Fill the bottle up with 5 oz. very hot water. Add ghee and wait for it to melt. Add milk powder, lactose, olive oil, grapeseed oil, molasses and any other once-per-day ingredients (vitamins, colostrum, DHA, except probiotics). Shake well. When contents are well mixed, add cold water so that the total volume reaches 8 ounces. Shake well again. Lastly add probiotics (to ensure their viability). Shake well one last time.

*Once per day ingredients

Storage Guidelines:

Once a bottle is made up, it needs to be consumed within an hour and any leftovers thrown out, or if making ahead and not feeding it at the time, store the bottle in the fridge for 2-3 days. You will want to taste it on the 3rd day to make sure it is still fresh. The recipe card included in the kit will provide directions on how to make larger liquid batches. If you do make a larger liquid batch, once all ingredients are mixed (except the once daily ingredients), we highly recommend pouring into individual bottles the amount your little one will consume in one feeding. This will keep the oils from hardening in a larger batch and not mixing evenly.

The formula can be stored in breast milk storage bags in the freezer for up to 6 months, just like breast milk.

The kit also provides a dry mix recipe, which uses the same ingredients in the same proportions, but the powders, molasses and oils are mixed up without the water and can be used more like a traditional “store bought” formula experience. This can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

How long will each ingredient last in this Goat Milk Recipe kit?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions and the answer is “It depends.” It depends primarily on how much you actually feed your baby. We have based our Nutrient Database on parents feeding their little ones 30 fl oz of formula per day. This may be high for some of you. Maybe you are only feeding 2 bottles per day, maybe more…

How much do you plan to feed your little one?

We’ve created this “coverage chart” that can help answer this question. The chart details how many days the formula kit will cover if you feed you baby 2 bottles, 3 bottles, or 4 bottles. In this case 1 “bottle” is equal to 8 fl oz. of the prepared formula. Based on this data we can see that by only feeding 2 bottles per day you will need more goat milk powder and goat milk lactose within 16 days of receiving your kit. If you are feeding 4 bottles per day, you will need your goat milk powder and lactose ingredients in 8 days.

Goat Milk Formula Refill Pack

If you are confident the Goat Milk Formula Recipe will work for you and you would like to stock up and save, then we recommend adding the Goat Milk Formula Refill Pack which will save you an additional 10%. Because the Whole Goat Milk and Goat Milk Lactose are the main base in the Homemade Goat Milk Recipe, they run out pretty quickly (see above chart). If you are feeding twins (email orders@mtcapra.com for info on our multiples discount program!) or just want to ensure you don’t run out within 2 weeks, this handy bundle is the perfect addition to the kit. The refill bundle includes:

  • 4 Whole Milk
  • 4 Goat Milk Lactose
  • 10 oz. Goat Milk Ghee.

Buying it in bulk saves you cash, time, shipping, and ensures that you don’t run out when it matters most!

Goat Milk Recipe Success!

“Due to several different reasons we were forced to supplement our newborn daughter from 3 days old. She became very rigid and “board-like” while on regular formula, she start to fuss when we put her knees to her belly and seemed irritable.  We decided to put her on the goats milk formula starting at 5 weeks old. We ordered the Goat Milk Formula Kit and after just 24 hrs it was as though we were given our newborn back. She is much easier to console, not near as rigid and will even fall asleep in our arms! Clearly the contents of the goats milk formula is very similar to breast milk. Thank you for giving us the ability to really enjoy our newborn! – Rachel in New Hampshire

I recently purchased the kit, and I am currently on day 11 of using it. My son had been through FOUR other formulas, and none of them took care of his reflux. Since we switched to the goat milk, we have been very pleased to see a massive decrease in his reflux. It is not completely gone, but I am extremely pleased with the results thus far. Other than my son feeling better in general, I must say the best thing about this formula is the fact that I know exactly what is in it. I highly recommend this product and this company. – Kristen in North Carolina

I want to use this formula for – insert age here. Can I do this?

Interestingly enough when I first developed this formula I was recommended parents hold off until baby was a few months old. However, we have been constantly updating and improving the formula and have had such overwhelmingly great feedback for all ages between newborn and 1 year that I feel comfortable recommending the formula to all ages. I never get tired of saying this though, keep your doctor in the loop.

Do I use the multivitamins/probiotics DHA or Colostrum in every bottle I make?

No. Just include those nutrients in one bottle per day and your baby will receive his/her needed vitamins and probiotics.

How do I store the liquid formula once made?

Once a bottle is made, it can be stored in the fridge for 2-3 days. You will want to taste it on the 3rd day to make sure it is still fresh. If you make a bottle and end up feeding it right away, we recommend throwing out any leftovers within 1 hour.

This also ensures that formula won’t be wasted as what is not consumed from the bottle in a serving needs to be thrown out. In the same manner, if your child is not drinking a full 8 oz bottle in a sitting, but maybe only 4 oz, we would suggest making up the 8 oz formula ingredients, then dividing it into two bottles of 4 oz each. One bottle can be fed right away, and the other stored in the fridge. You could also split up an 8 oz serving into 4 bottles with 2 oz each if that is all you are feeding at a time.

The formula can be stored in breast milk storage bags in the freezer for up to 6 months, just like breast milk.

Do any of the kit items need to be refrigerated?

Yes, the DHA needs to be refrigerated after opening. The ghee can be stored in the fridge or on the counter top/pantry, just make sure if you are not going to be refrigerating it that you don’t cross-contaminate it with any other foods. Nothing else has to be refrigerated, but some like to refrigerate the probiotics and grapeseed oil to extend freshness.

Do you have a ready made formula version?

No, we do not sell a ready made formula, we only sell the ingredients to make your own goat milk formula at home. However, the kit does provide a dry mix recipe, which uses the same ingredients in the same proportions as the original recipe, but the powders, molasses and oils are mixed up without the water and can be used more like a traditional “store bought” formula experience. This can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. You use 2 heaping tablespoons (approx. 30g) of this dry mixture for an 8 oz bottle.

How do I store the products?

The DHA is the only item that has to be refrigerated. You can refrigerate the ghee for a longer shelf life or you can leave it out. If you leave it out of the fridge (which will make it easier to scoop and use) please be careful not to contaminate it with other foods (like spreading it on toast and sticking the butter knife back in the jar), as it can cause mold to grow over time. Otherwise store the rest of the powders and oils in a dry place.

I thought goat milk was low in folate and vitamin B12?

You are right. (good job!) That is why we add the multivitamin powder.

The directions on the milk powder say I should use 2 scoops but your recipe only calls for one. Why is that?

A baby under 12 months old still has developing kidneys. Straight, undiluted “full strength” goat milk powder uses two scoops. There is simply too much protein and naturally occurring sodium in that amount of milk powder for the maturing kidney’s of a baby to process. Therefore we reduce the amount of milk powder to reduce the amount of protein. We then increase the amount of carbohydrates to make up for what we’ve taken out.

Is my baby getting enough iron with this formula?

Yes and here is why. When a baby is born full term they usually have a 6 month supply of iron that they have stored up while still in the womb. Therefore, from 0-6 months, the iron requirement for infants is only .27 mg/day. After six months however, the requirement jumps up to 11 mg for babies between 7 -12 months and then drops back down to 7 mg/day for toddlers 1-3 years of age. (The iron RDA won’t go back up to 11mg/day until your son or daughter is a teenager.) The formula that I created will deliver 0.5mg iron/100 calories of formula. Usually by the time a baby gets to 6 months, they begin eating a variety of solid foods and as long as parents are careful to include iron rich foods (winter squash, sweet potato etc.) along with vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables (vitamin C assists with iron absorption) supplementing with iron drops shouldn’t be necessary. However if you choose to supplement with iron drops remember that often these can cause constipation.

My baby just started the formula and loves it! He seems constipated though. Should I be worried?

It is very common for slight constipation to occur when switching to formula. There are several easy fixes that will help the transition. First, give them time to adjust on their own. The digestive system of an infant does not react as quickly as a mature digestive system to changes in diet and sometimes all the baby needs is a little more time to regulate on their own. If however it seems that they need a little help you can do one of two things. First, add less milk powder to the formula. Instead of using 1 scoop per bottle use 3/4 of a scoop and let the formula be a bit watered down for a day or two. This will usually clear things up and then you can go back to the regular recipe. Another trick is to add a generous amount of blackstrap molasses to the formula, blackstrap molasses is a natural laxative. The recipe calls for 1/8 of a teaspoon of molasses but feel free to use double, triple or even quadruple that for a short period of time to help clear up the constipation.

The bottle keeps getting clogged when I use the once daily ingredients and my baby and I are both frustrated, what do we do?

When it comes to clogging, the issue is typically the colostrum. We grind the colostrum as fine as we can, but sometimes it has a hard time getting through smaller bottle nipples, especially for newborns. We have been told that the Dr. Brown’s bottles are the worst bottles for clogging, and that Aventi and Mam bottles seem to work better, but it may depend on the bottle nipple size. Sometimes going up a nipple size, if it is safe for your little one, is enough to do the trick. Pre-grinding the colostrum in a mortar and pestle may be helpful. Ultimately the colostrum is an optional ingredient, so you can leave it out or mix it into baby food when your child is old enough to eat solids. Some parents mix a small amount of formula with the colostrum (or other once daily ingredients) and use an oral syringe to gently squeeze it into the side of the mouth.

If I am breastfeeding and supplementing with this, do I still need to include the once daily items?

This is totally up to you. We recommend that we provide baby with the most nutrient dense food possible and therefore recommend adding the once daily items.

9 Month Old and Mommy Approved!

I ordered the goat milk formula after I stopped breastfeeding my 9 month old. I love the clean ingredients, allergy friendly and ease of use. It is a bonus that my baby seems to love the taste and is digesting it well! A great product that I will continue to use as he gets older!

Loving the formula so far

It's only been 9 days since my son was born, and we figured out on day 3 that I am not producing enough milk. This also happened with my first son too. I had purchased the formula ingredients in advance just in case. So glad I did. We ended up making a batch very late at night because I had a hormonal breakdown about my supply. Since starting the formula as a supplement to my milk, our baby sleeps 4 hour stretches, has less crying fits, and is well fed! Thank you Mt Capra

We love this stuff!

My 4 month old loves the goat milk formula! It was a little hard in the beginning, if you don’t warm it up enough the nipple will plug. Now I warm distilled water, mix everything in pitcher and then keep in glass pitcher in fridge. When I make a batch of milk, I will normally make a quart to keep in the fridge and then I will put another quart in freezer bags and freeze some.
Also, I do add once daily ingredients in to a quart serving.

Couldn't breastfeed. So grateful for an alternative to mainstream formula

Due in part to an unexpected NICU stay, we couldn't breastfeed our firstborn son. My brother and sister-in-law had used Mt. Capra for their daughter, and recommended it to us. We love it and are so grateful to have access to an alternative to mainstream formulas. Once you get used to it, it's an easy system to use. Would highly recommend to anyone seeking a way to feed their child without loading them up on synthetic ingredients, vegetable oils, etc.
