My mom and I have been trying out a natural, homemade facial recipe that we have come to love! This facial recipe is easy to make, packed with minerals, purifying, detoxifying, and moisturizing. You will notice benefits the first time, but to really get the full effect, use it 2-3 times a week for a couple of weeks. Your skin will be vibrant and glowing!
Homemade Facial Recipe
- 1 tsp bentonite clay
- 1 tsp Capra Mineral Whey
- ½ tsp Apple Cider Vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 tsp raw honey
- 1 Tbsp yogurt
- Optional: A scoop of Colostrum powder
- Optional: small amount of cacao powder (maybe 1/2 tsp or so)
Directions: Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl. Wash your face and neck with a natural, gentle cleanser. Then apply the facial to your clean face and neck. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then rinse. It should get a bit tighter as it dries.
Note: This will make enough for 2-3 facials. I suggest sharing it with your mom or a friend for a great pampering session, but you can also store the leftover in the fridge. It is probably best to use the leftover within a day or two. The texture will be a little bit gritty from the Capra Mineral Whey, but it helps with exfoliation to remove dead skin cells.
How do the ingredients work to improve skin?
Bentonite Clay – Bentonite Clay is rich in minerals and is a great gentle detoxifier and cleanser. It will help pull toxins, bacteria, dirt, and excess oil from your skin. In doing so, it helps to clear up the skin and reduce blemishes.
Capra Mineral Whey – Capra Mineral Whey is a great multi-mineral. Rich in electrolytes like potassium and sodium, Capra Mineral Whey can help to keep the skin balanced and hydrated. One of the minerals it contains in trace amounts is copper, which helps with skin’s elasticity, which is important for preventing wrinkles.
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) – It may surprise you that our skin’s pH is actually more acidic, which protects us from bacteria by creating an environment that restricts their ability to proliferate. ACV is acidic, and so helps balance out the more alkaline pH of the minerals from the Capra Mineral Whey and clay. ACV is known to have all kinds of benefits. It has been used to soothe and take the heat out of sunburns when diluted with water and helps maintain healthy, glowing skin in general. An Apple Cider Vinegar rinse is also great for your hair! It helps remove buildup on the scalp from oil, dandruff, hair gel and other hair care products.
Lemon Juice – Lemon juice is also acidic, so can take the place of the ACV depending on which one you have on hand or which effect you want. Lemon is also known to purify and works to lighten spots on the skin, like those annoying red acne marks that may still be healing. It will help even out the skin tone from blotches of discoloration and help your skin to glow. Lemons also have vitamin C, which is needed to form collagen, which is what provides the structure for our skin.
Honey – Honey is a humectant, which means it helps keep in moisture, making it the perfect addition to a healthy homemade facial. If you buy your honey raw, which you should, it naturally has live enzymes in it.
Yogurt – You can use goat milk yogurt, cow milk yogurt, or even coconut yogurt. I have been using coconut yogurt from GT’s (which is also a popular brand of kombucha). It is called CocoYo. You can tell it is live with probiotics and it has a nice tang and zing from the fermented nature. The enzymes and probiotics will help your skin shine. If your face is particularly dry, it is usually recommended to do whole yogurt as the fat helps moisturize. If your face tends to be more oily, it is usually recommended to do a lower fat yogurt, however, I think it can still be beneficial to do full fat.
There is a belief that like fixes like and that your face is overproducing oil if it is dry in order to moisturize it, and that by stripping that oil away that acts as a natural protectant, it is forcing your body to create more oil to compensate for the dryness. A lot of companies have come out with oil cleansers where you use oil to cleanse your face, as the thought is that oil attracts oil and will help clean off excess oil without stripping your skin and leaving it dry.
Colostrum – Includes a host of immune and growth factors. The growth factors aid in the repair and regeneration of skin cells. Lactoferrin is one of the immune factors and helps with inflammation and to protect against bacteria. This ingredient is optional and may be better taken internally to strengthen the immune system from the inside out and help support a healthy intestinal lining.
Cacao powder – Cacao powder is the raw version of cocoa powder. Cocoa powder is roasted. Cacao powder is rich in antioxidants, and contains large amounts of magnesium. It helps fight inflammation, oxidation, and it increases circulation when applied to the skin.
Healthy Skin From the Inside Out
Of course the best way to promote beautiful, glowing skin is to get a steady supply of minerals and vitamins from a healthy diet. Make sure to get your fruits and veggies in, as well as eat healthy fats and proteins. Proteins form the building blocks for our skin, and fats make up our cell walls and help regulate inflammation (omega 3’s). The type of fats that make up our cell walls determine if the cells allow good nutrients in and toxins out on a regular basis, so get a mixture of healthy fats!
Unfortunately a lot of our soils are mineral deficient these days, so taking an extra supply of minerals through supplementation is a great way to make sure you are getting in all your nutrition needs. Capra Mineral Whey is a rich supply of minerals that is condensed from goat milk. It is beneficial for keeping you well hydrated due to the potassium, sodium and other electrolytes it contains. It also is useful for regulating the digestion. A healthy gut is one of the key secrets for healthy skin.
You can also support a healthy gut by drinking 2 tsp of Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 oz of water 30 minutes before a meal. This works to increase stomach acid to digest proteins, as well as hydrate the body. Digestion and a healthy gut is key to overall health.
I hope you try and love this facial as much as I do!
